Quarry House is organised around the meeting of a concrete enclosure and a stone boundary. In this imagined Porto residence, the view is close enough to be read as texture. A broad opening holds the rock within the proportions of the room, allowing its irregular surface to sit beside a more measured structure. The landscape becomes an immediate presence rather than a distant backdrop.

Concrete establishes a steady rhythm overhead and at the edges of the opening. Its joints divide the surface into large, legible sections. Below, the ground remains quiet, giving the eye a continuous plane from which to read the space. These elements create a room with a clear outline, but its character comes from what happens where that outline meets the uneven stone beyond.

The glazed boundary is deliberately light in comparison. Slender vertical lines pass across the rock without concealing it, introducing a second scale to the composition. Seen from within, the glass holds reflections of the ceiling and floor against the stone. At times the boundary becomes apparent; at others, it seems to withdraw. The room feels enclosed without losing its connection to the surface outside.

Light gives the rock depth. Small shadows gather in the recesses while projecting edges catch a brighter tone. The concrete responds more evenly, making the difference between the two materials easy to understand. As daylight changes, the same view becomes softer or more sharply defined. The architecture remains still while the surface it frames continues to alter.

The domestic quality of the house lies in this slower relationship to its setting. Furniture can occupy the centre without competing with the perimeter. A chair placed near the opening becomes a position from which to watch minor changes in colour and shadow. The room offers shelter, but also gives everyday activity a persistent connection to the ground around it.

Field Assembly uses a limited material palette to make the boundary between building and landscape unusually tangible. Concrete supplies order, stone introduces variation and glass allows both to be experienced together. Quarry House finds its expression in that meeting, creating a place where the familiar scale of a room opens onto the longer life of its surroundings.

Block Study 04 reads first as a compact metal volume. Its proportions are direct, and its surfaces appear almost continuous from a distance. Closer inspection reveals a network of seams and small recesses that interrupt this initial impression. Conceived by Unit Practice in Seoul, the object uses a simple outer form to make small differences in depth and alignment unusually visible.

Aluminium gives the block a muted brightness. The surface is neither a mirror nor entirely flat in appearance; it receives the room as a soft change in tone. A darker joint can therefore carry considerable weight within the composition. The line between two planes becomes a deliberate interval, allowing the viewer to understand the volume as an assembly rather than an indivisible mass.

The top surface introduces another rhythm. Openings and lowered sections catch shadow, bringing depth to an otherwise contained silhouette. Their placement invites the eye to move across the object before returning to its edges. These small interruptions prevent the cube from becoming purely graphic. It remains a physical thing whose character depends on light arriving from a particular direction.

Placed on a table, the study establishes a small field of attention around itself. Its straight edges make nearby textures more apparent, whether the supporting surface is timber, stone or fabric. The relationship works in both directions: the setting changes the apparent temperature of the metal, while the metal gives the setting a sharper point of reference.

The object also has a different presence at the scale of the hand. Edges that appeared abstract become boundaries to move around. The apparent regularity of the volume gives way to the sequence of its details. Turning it slightly changes which joints are visible and which disappear, making a small adjustment feel like a new composition.

Unit Practice treats the block as a study in how little a form needs in order to sustain attention. Its expression is carried by intervals, surface and proportion. Block Study 04 offers no single privileged view. It holds a series of quiet differences within a familiar geometry, rewarding the time spent looking from one side to another.
