Block Study 04 reads first as a compact metal volume. Its proportions are direct, and its surfaces appear almost continuous from a distance. Closer inspection reveals a network of seams and small recesses that interrupt this initial impression. Conceived by Unit Practice in Seoul, the object uses a simple outer form to make small differences in depth and alignment unusually visible.

Aluminium gives the block a muted brightness. The surface is neither a mirror nor entirely flat in appearance; it receives the room as a soft change in tone. A darker joint can therefore carry considerable weight within the composition. The line between two planes becomes a deliberate interval, allowing the viewer to understand the volume as an assembly rather than an indivisible mass.

The top surface introduces another rhythm. Openings and lowered sections catch shadow, bringing depth to an otherwise contained silhouette. Their placement invites the eye to move across the object before returning to its edges. These small interruptions prevent the cube from becoming purely graphic. It remains a physical thing whose character depends on light arriving from a particular direction.

Placed on a table, the study establishes a small field of attention around itself. Its straight edges make nearby textures more apparent, whether the supporting surface is timber, stone or fabric. The relationship works in both directions: the setting changes the apparent temperature of the metal, while the metal gives the setting a sharper point of reference.

The object also has a different presence at the scale of the hand. Edges that appeared abstract become boundaries to move around. The apparent regularity of the volume gives way to the sequence of its details. Turning it slightly changes which joints are visible and which disappear, making a small adjustment feel like a new composition.

Unit Practice treats the block as a study in how little a form needs in order to sustain attention. Its expression is carried by intervals, surface and proportion. Block Study 04 offers no single privileged view. It holds a series of quiet differences within a familiar geometry, rewarding the time spent looking from one side to another.

Stone Court Pavilion is imagined as a place for gathering at the edge of Cape Town. A broad horizontal roof establishes a sheltered area without fully closing it to the surrounding air. Beneath it, a pale ground plane extends between a solid wall and a stand of trees. The composition gives the court a clear orientation while leaving its use open to the people who arrive.

The roof is the strongest line in the project. Its depth is held against the open space below, making the shaded area feel both protected and expansive. Repeated elements across the underside introduce a finer rhythm. They bring the large span into a scale that can be followed by the eye, giving structure a visible role in the experience of the court.

Stone provides continuity at ground level. Its varied colour prevents the surface from reading as a single blank plane, and its joints establish a quiet measure of distance. Walking across the court becomes a way of understanding its dimensions. The surface is broad enough for movement, yet detailed enough to make a pause feel grounded in a particular place.

Trees give the architecture another kind of support. Their dark trunks interrupt the pale background with irregular spacing and slight changes in angle. They soften the precision of the roof without disguising it. Moving between them reveals different portions of the court, creating a sequence of views that remains open to wind, shade and the changing position of the sun.

The pavilion does not depend on a single programme to feel occupied. A solitary visitor can stand beneath the roof and understand the scale of the enclosure, while a larger group can gather without exhausting its capacity. The empty centre is useful precisely because it has not been filled with a fixed arrangement. It can hold conversation, movement or a period of stillness.

Open Ground Office gives the project its character through a few enduring relationships: roof and ground, wall and opening, regular structure and growing trees. Stone Court Pavilion makes shelter feel generous by keeping those relationships legible. Its architecture provides enough definition to bring people together and enough space for each gathering to take its own form.
